Am mother to an 11 year old daughter who plays violin and viola - the latter instrument she has taken to like a duck to water - apparently!Just been accepted as a viola player in the National Children's Orchestra for 2007.She's so excited.Looking tentatively at violas.
A lovely site for her to look at.
Thankyou.
Amanda

Subject:Planning to make a Viola

I'm a Luthier who makes F5 style manolins and have made one Cello. I'm planning to make a viola as my next interesting project. Your site is very informative and inspiring. Reading through all that is here has confirmed for me that I must make a viola. I do a lot of repairs on stringed instruments of all kinds. Thankyou for all the information on this site.

Subject:Beautiful instruments

I am a violist that play and teach in South Africa. I am playing on a Bulgarian instrument that seems to fit your description of the wide middle bout and deeper ribs, with the resultant tenor-type tone. The previous owner that commissioned this instrument, said that it is based on the Tertis model measurements. Where can I find more information on this?
i would love to see and hear your instruments one day - Violas are my love in life...

Your violas look wonderful. While I am not an accomplished player, I have spent many hours trying to reproduce the design method of the Brescan instruments. While I think I have somewhat succeeded, I have added a twise, the cut out trebel bout of the Erdesz. Of course, the instrument still needs to be beautiful and I find yours exceptionally beautiful. Thank you, David, for all the excellent photographs.
